Do I love it and do I look forward to the silver lining on the day my iPod dies when I don’t have to depend on Apple anymore? Most definitely. Would I recommend foobar too anyone? Absolutely not. It isn’t that foobar2000 is inherently better or more righteous than the titanic iTunes, it just fits my preferences and habits really well.

Foobar is open sourced and totally free to use, there is even a mobile app now so you can use foobar on your phone and your computer. Others will notice that they have never heard of the Foobar store (there’s a reason for this), and that there aren’t any artists exclusively releasing music on the subscribtion based streaming service Foobify. The most notable feature that foobar lacks for me is “GO TO ITEM STARTING WITH LETTER XYZ” (this is the technical term) command that’s executed by pressing a text key.

However I am also generally lazy and I only have so much time to manage the music files and their tagsĪ brief aside of music files. The built in file organizer and music importer for iTunes is powerful, making it easy to find your music and add most formats of music. On the other hand, there are reasons that iTunes requires more memory to run. For me the 50% difference in resource demand makes a big difference so when I listen to music on my computer I almost exclusively use foobar. iTunes is not a problem or considered particularly demanding in comparison to some other applications for up to date computers. Yes, my current computer is old and was never top of the line. What I need happens to be one of the biggest advantages of F2K over iTunes… it’s lightweight.

Many skins available to download are for more beautiful and original in comparison to the default User Interface than my configuration is, but mine is just what I need. Even though millions of “skins” (themes and configurations of the interface) are available to download with just a few key strokes, the fun for me is the managing, crafting, customizing the most frequently used program on my computer to my tastes as exactly as my computer literacy will enable me. To a large extent F2K is the opposite of every brand spankin new product presented by Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor on “Tool Time.” Foobar requires that you read the instructions and is about as barebones as you can get if you don’t take the time to develop the interface.įoobar distinctly lacks the download, import, play, one-two-three-ta-dah! quality that forms the bedrock of iTunes’ success. By word association I immediately think of a strange musical spinoff from Tim Allen’s very dated “Home Improvement” sitcom. I continue to use iTunes as part of my music collecting hobby but in the last few years I have been utilizing the features and personalization offered by foobar2000. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t less popular free programs that outcompete Apple in a variety of ways. Similarly to the iPhone, pretty much all of the competitors borrow heavily from the groundbreaking designs by Apple. iTunes and the 14+ following updates over the past 16 years made digital music accessible en masse. While I will be one of the first to critique the giant fruit company that is one of the global leaders in personal consumer electronics and technology, they nonetheless have set the standard for mobile music players as well as music and media player applications.
